Exhibitions Walking...Landscape...Memory
This exhibition launches a year during which Salisbury Arts Centre focuses on environmental concerns. On show will be the work of four artists influenced by global and local landscapes.

Text and photographic works by Richard Long document his walks through the landscapes in Ireland and Japan. A series of black and white photographs by Fay Godwin from 1975 capture the timelessness of the Wessex countryside. Painter Lydia Halcrow (pictured) exhibits brand new work inspired by her walks on Salisbury Plain, collapsing tank path maps with landscape vistas to create brooding images. Rob Irving uses photographs and modified LiDAR maps to explore the myth of subterranean 'Earth energies', which course through Avebury's ritual landscape.

Free entry. Opening hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-3pm.

On: Fri 15th Jan 2016
Until: Sat 27th Feb 2016

Exhibitions Exhibition - Thelwell: Ponies and Places
A major exhibition from the family archives of Norman Thelwell, whose popular cartoons of plump girls on ponies are joined by many other satires of twentieth-century life.

Less familiar are Thelwell’s beautiful paintings of local landscapes – he lived close to Mottisfont and captured the surrounding countryside in a series of stunning watercolours, many of which have never been exhibited before.

This show features both strands of his work, showing how Thelwell’s amusing observations on life in the country are rooted in a deep-seated love of the Hampshire landscape. They are also brought to life by an extraordinary talent for naturalistic painting.

This exhibition is the perfect antidote for those late winter blues. It is both beautiful and funny: Thelwell’s wit is as fresh now as the day his watercolour and ink dried.
