Exhibitions World leaders of the 1970's - a decade of turmoil
Arundells latest exhibition explores the histories, careers, achievements and errors of nine of the most important political leaders of the decade and their relationship with Britain. Featured are Richard Nixon, Leonid Brezhnev, Mao Zedong, Willy Brandt, Indira Gandhi, Georges Pompidou, Kakuei Tanaka, Pierre Trudeau and Henry Kissinger. Little known facts are revealed : whose pallbearers included Fidel Castro and Leonard Cohen? who almost suffocated as a child in a snowdrift, who foiled a thief in the ziggurat of Ur, and who changed their name before coming to power? There are over 70 iconic photographs as well as documents from this turbulent period together with artefacts from the Arundells house collection. Among events covered are The European Referendum of 1975, the Ugandan Asian issue in 1972, Britains battles with the USA in 1973 over Middle East issues and an amusing Leonid Brezhnev/Richard Nixon encounter at Camp David.
