Tender Is The Night
The first performance of Malcolm Archer’s ‘Vespers’ is being given as part of an exciting programme of 20th and 21st century music, entitled ‘Tender Is The Night’, by The Farrant Singers, conducted by Andrew Mackay. The work consists of beautifully crafted settings of poems and prayers relating to the evening from such writers as Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis and and W.B Yeats as well as a Collect from the service of Evensong and, unusually, a Ghanaian fisherman’s prayer.
The programme also includes ‘Into Thy Hands’ by Jonathan Dove which was commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Salisbury Cathedral and given its first performance by Salisbury Cathedral Choir in 1996 and Philip Moore’s moving setting of ‘Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’ - Morning Prayers, Prayers in Time of Distress and Evening Prayers- which were written while Bonhoeffer was incarcerated by the Nazis prior to his execution just three weeks before the end of the war.
Completing the programme is Benjamin Britten’s ‘Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings’ for which the Farrant Singers are joined by Guy Cutting, tenor, Andrew Littlemore, horn and the Farrant Orchestra.

David Starkey on Henry VIII
Henry VIII is the only king whose shape you remember. He bestrides our history like a colossus and the decisions he took still reverberate today. The Reformation is the first Brexit; his ministers devised the doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty and his tumultuous personal life pitted religion against politics as brutally as in our own age of Isis. In this lecture David Starkey draws on his unique knowledge of Henry’s reign on the one hand, and his insights as a leading commentator on modern politics on the other, to illuminate both the Tudor age and our own.
