Exhibitions Men At Work – The Tentmakers of Cairo
Although the demand for the opulent tented palaces of past Sultans has long gone, the skills needed to decorate these tents live on and are now being used by Egyptian craftsmen to create stunning works of textile art, a selection of which go on show at Salisbury’s Fisherton Mill this spring.

Ranging in size from an eye-catching 2-metre-tall wall hanging to a series of smaller panels, these textiles are worked with dramatic designs in applied blocks of cotton. Many depict the geometric patterns often associated with Islamic art, but the use of brilliant new colours and ever more complex designs have given them a decidedly contemporary twist.

Originally these hangings were made to decorate the inside of tents used for special occasions such as weddings and other ceremonial events. Gradually such tents fell out of fashion and the demand for the hangings declined accordingly, with the growing tourist market replacing the domestic market. The number of craftsmen or tentmakers declined too and now there are less than 100 working in Cairo, all based in the old tentmaking street Chariah El-Khiamiah. These remaining craftsmen – and following tradition they are all men rather than women – still work using the traditional techniques of handstitched appliqué, but have increasingly felt free to experiment with new designs and update their craft for the 21st century. The result is a series of textiles which retain their traditional handmade aesthetic while looking very much at home either in a contemporary house or gallery space.

In recent years the Tentmakers have built up an international reputation, with their breakthrough coming in 2011 at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. Since then they have exhibited in Europe, Australia and the USA and later on this year their work will go on show in South Africa, but before then art lovers in Wiltshire have a chance to view their extraordinary examples of textile art. (And there will even be a chance to learn some of the skills and techniques involved in their creation as some of the Tentmakers will visit Fisherton Mill to host a series workshops on their craft)

Until: Tue 30th May 2017

Outdoor Events "Beyond the Garden Gate"
Hale and Woodgreen Horticultural Society in the New Forest is opening its beautiful gardens on Sunday 21 May (Hale) and on Sunday 18 June (Woodgreen).

We choose the two dates to reflect the differing soil conditions in the 2 villages and to give you more gardens to visit overall, with 2 full days of gardening enjoyment. There will be at least 10 lovely gardens open on each day. Hale gardens mostly have acid soils and so grow lovely early rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and many other garden shrubs and flowers. Woodgreen gardens have more varied soils and exhibit great early summer flowering beauty.

With so many gardens open on both days, you are guaranteed lots to see. Tickets from the Woodgreen Community Shop in advance or any garden on the trail on the day. Refreshments will be available and we expect to make significant contributions to a number of local charities: Stars Appeal, The Salisbury Hospice, The Cherry Tree and Furzey Gardens. In 2015 we raised £4,000!

Swimming for teenage mental health
I am a science teacher at the Trafalgar School. at Downton. I have been swimming twice a week in an unheated outdoors, pond since August 2016. Records/evidence is on my facebook page "swimming for teenage mental health". So far I have raised £2800 and I am hoping to get to £5000 by August. I was hoping Spire fm might promote my cause by interviewing me or mentioning my fundraising. I am fundraising for the Family Counselling Trust, a local charity which underwrites the cost of counselling for teenagers with mental health difficulties.. On May 21st I am having an event in Alderbury where many people will swim with me, and there will also be irish set dancing! My (second) justgiving crowdfunding page is called "rachel-eveling-3". Please contact me if you think Spire FM can help me to help teenagers with mental health difficulties. Best Regards, Rachel Eveling
