Stars Appeal Great Wall of China Trek

Support Spire FM's Martin Starke and the Stars Appeal trekkers.

This weekend (Saturday April 27th), our team of 49 amazing Stars Appeal supporters are off on the adventure of a lifetime to raise funds to help local people in Salisbury District Hospital.

Great Wall of China 1

Stretching 6000km in a dotted line across China, the Great Wall was begun in the 5th Century BC. As it snakes across the mountains it conjures up a sense of history which is difficult to grasp until you have had the opportunity to experience it.

Our trek is very varied, as we pass through woodland and terraced farmland, and follow the contours of the beautiful hills and mountains in remote areas north of Beijing. We follow old sections of the Great Wall, as well as restored sections with smooth flagstones and lots of steps!

This challenge is physically demanding but offers fabulous scenery and a fascinating insight into a rich culture and history.

"The whole experience was out of this world! It's so difficult to put into words how it made me feel other to say it was extremely emotional but well worth the experience."   Mandy, Stars Appeal Grand Canyon trekker (2015)

"I was nervous about meeting so many new people, and especially nervous about going away on my own. I was taken right out of my comfort zone, but was made to feel very much part of the trek community - this exceeded my expectations!"  Theresa, Stars Appeal Inca Trail trekker (2017)

China = HOT!

Today's been another day of hard trekking, as we continue along the Great Wall of China.

There's still plenty of steep steps, and it's very warm (up to the early 30s in celsius!) - but spirits are high.

Hello from China!

What's been brilliant during the trip has been the teamwork.

We've all made sure to get each other through the tough times and everyone keeps smiling.

We even took a bit of a break to watch the sun set over the Wall to end another day's trekking

Always in the back of our minds is the fact that we're doing all this to raise money for the Stars Appeal at Salisbury District Hospital.

We've been delighted with the response we've had to the challenge, and your good wishes are really appreciated.

Spire FM's Martin Starke is the 'lead trekker' and called in to the studio with an update:

We've got a couple more days of trekking to go.

But we've now got the longest day of walking out of the way and we can enjoy the final parts.

Everyday we're trekkin'!

Everyday we're trekkin'!

Another day, another load of steps to take on our journey.

The weather's been up there with the biggest challenges...

The hot sun's taking temperatures up to the high 20s celsius and there's very little shade.

When there is some, we've been taking the opportunity to take a break:

A quick lunch and water break

While it all looks stunning during the walks, we're starting to get the feeling it might never end!

One team member, Penny Calvert called in to the Spire FM Studio to explain how she's doing:

Penny says the Trek's been difficult but a once in a lifetime experience!

We've still got a few more days of trekking to go, all in the knowledge that it's raising an incredible amount of money for the Stars Appeal.

All the money raised will go towards services at Salisbury District Hospital above and beyond what the NHS can provide.

If you'd like to support us and keep the money going up, please go to the Stars Appeal's Virgin Money Giving page.

Just put 'TREK' into the message box, so we know it's for us.

Thank you!!
