As Policy Director of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate at the Home Office, Sir Martin led the Treasury teams controlling defence spending and managing European monetary issues.

He was the senior official at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills for six years, leading work to increase university and research funding, reform apprenticeships and improve innovation across the economy.

He has regular media engagement in the national debate about the implications of Brexit for jobs and prosperity, and risks to the UK’s research base.
