10 Christmas activities in Salisbury

With the days getting shorter and the air growing colder, Christmas is well and truly on its way as the countdown begins.

So here's a list of 10 local Christmas activities to get you in the festive spirit:

1) THE SNOWMAN WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA

This heartwarming winter tale comes to Salisbury Cathedral this Christmas on the big screen, and is partnered with a world-class orchestra drawn for some of the UK's top musicians.

This enchanting show has been seen by over 150,000 people and featured in The Guardian and The Sunday Times as a top family Christmas event. 

Ticket prices range from £11 to £22 and can be purchased via Eventbrite.

2) SALISBURY CHRISTMAS FAYRE

The city's festive stalls will return on Saturday 30th November and runs until Tuesday 24th December, giving you just under a month to enjoy the huge variety of stalls and Christmas treats available.

Expect live music and plenty of hot chocolate at Guildhall Square this winter.

3) SALISBURY ICE RINK

The iconic city ice rink runs from Saturday 30th November until Sunday 5th January.

Protected from the harsh winter weather by a marquee, this guarantees all-weather fun for all ages.

Tickets can be bought online or at the ice rink.

4) NUTCRACKER TRAIL

A free event, run by Salisbury BID and sponsored by Salisbury Reds, this festive hunt is the perfect way to keep the kids entertained during those busy Christmas shop-a-thons or a great activity to enjoy as a family.

Find the 10 giant nutcracker figures hidden around the city to be in with a chance of winning a £100 gift voucher.

Trail activity booklets will be available to download/pick up soon. Winners will be chosen at random.

5) SALISBURY CATHEDRAL ADVENT PROCESSION

There are few better places to attend an advent procession than in one of England's most famous cathedrals.

The service begins in total darkness before a single candle is lit, and by the time the procession finishes, 1400 candles will have brought the cathedral to life. 

Admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. There are three Darkness to Light processions:

  • 29th November 2019 at 7.00pm (doors open at 6.00pm)
  • 30th November 2019 at 7.00pm (doors open at 6.00pm)
  • 1st December 2019 at 5.00pm (doors open at 4.00pm)

6) CHRISTMAS WREATH MAKING WORKSHOP

An informal craft session hosted at the Milford Hall Hotel, a local florist will demonstrate how to make a decorative festive wreath.

After the crafting of the wreath, enjoy an afternoon tea and a glass of prosecco before returning home with your very own Christmas creation. 

Tickets are available for £49.95 per person. Two workshops will be hosted on Tuesday 3rd December and Tuesday 10th December. 

7) SALISBURY LANTERN PROCESSION

This is returning for its 8th year in the city centre on Thursday 12th December.

Once again, the lanterns that have been created by local families, schools and community groups will be paraded around Salisbury.

The procession will make its way from the Cathedral to the Market Place.

8) SANTA'S GROTTO AT THE GUILDHALL

Take the family and pay Father Christmas a visit this December and enjoy a special story read by the man himself.

Every child will receive a festive gift and have the chance to take a photo with Santa as a keepsake. 

The grotto will run every Saturday and Sunday from December 7th until December 22nd.

Opening hours are 10.00am to 2.00pm and tickets are £3.50 per child.

9) SLADE - THE ROCKIN' HOME FOR CHRISTMAS TOUR

The 'Merry Xmas Everybody' singers will be descending upon Salisbury City Hall on December 8th for a flamboyant festive sing-a-long.

10) WHISKY TASTING AT ARUNDELLS

Hosted by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, this evening offers whisky lovers the opportunity to sample some of the finest and rarest spirits.

The tasting is held at the Grade II listed Arundells house in the Cathedral Close on Saturday 7th December, and tickets include at least three tastings and various snacks.
