Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue are offering free 'Safe and Well' checks for people who fit their criteria.

Our local fire brigade has launched the CHARLIE campaign now as it's Carers' Week nationally (June 10th to 16th).

They're calling on carers to get in touch with them to flag up people who could do with some advice to keep themselves safe in their own home.

Firefighters can come out and do safety checks for those 'most vulnerable to the risk of fire'.

They've said a person is known as a CHARLIE, if they fit one or more of these criteria:

  • Care and support needs
  • Hoarding and/or mental health issues
  • Alcohol and medication use
  • Reduced mobility
  • Lives alone
  • Inappropriate smoking
  • Elderly - 65+

Firefighters can offer advice to people in their own home to make sure they can keep themselves safer

Safe & Well Manager Vikki Thomas said:

"Anyone who needs care support is particularly vulnerable to the dangers of fire, for a variety of reasons. They may not be able to respond to a fire as quickly, they may not be able to escape a fire, they may be more at risk due to lifestyle factors, or they may use healthcare equipment or medicines which carry a fire risk, such as oxygen or emollient creams. A Safe & Well visit can identify the risks and reduce them as much as possible."

There are more than 6.5 million people in the UK who are currently caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is older, disabled or seriously ill.

Many of those people don't identify themselves as carers, they simply see themselves as spouses, partners, parents, children or friends.

Some of the vulnerable people also don't see themselves as needing extra support, so Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue is calling on carers to make a referral for help.

The Safe & Well team is also providing referral prompt cards to domiciliary care providers, GP practices, reablement teams and other professionals who will potentially be visiting people at home.

There's further advice to carers, including information on how to request a Safe & Well visit, on the Fire Brigade's website.
