Fancy helping out at Salisbury Cathedral?

A Volunteer Guide Discovery Day will be held at Salisbury Cathedral next month to give people an idea of what volunteering there is really like.

At the moment they need extra Floor Guides, so it's hoped this information day will encourage more of us to get involved.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

To be a guide, you don't need to be a history buff or an ecclesiastical expert.

We've been told people 'with an enthusiasm for being an ambassador for the Cathedral and a desire to share it with people from all over the world is enough.'

The Cathedral training team will then do the rest.

All guides undergo a seven day (spread over seven weeks) training course learning not just facts but other useful skills like voice projection and presentation.

They come from all walks of life and all age groups with many developing their own specialism - stained glass, the medieval clock, the architecture etc.

Salisbury Cathedral Nave
Salisbury Cathedral is one of the city's most popular sites, so they need people to show visitors around!

There are also Welcomers, who meet and greet visitors as they arrive.

Others do the Floor tours, around two per four-hour shift, lasting between 40 and 60 minutes.

DISCOVERY DAY

The information day will take place on Saturday 14th September from 4.00pm.

It will start with an introductory talk in the Chapter House, followed by a trip up to the West Window high above the Nave, and a tour of the historic graffiti (as seen below).

The day will round up with a chance to meet guiding teams one-on-one.

Anyone can go along, no previous experience needed.

To find out more or to sign up for the event contact our volunteer co-ordinator, Christine Keegan on email c.keegan@salcath.co.uk or phone 01722 555123.
