As the cold temperatures continue into February, NFU Mutual Wessex wants us to make sure our house is adequately insured.

Emergencies can happen to anyone, so Simon Hedges, an agent at NFU Mutual Wessex in Salisbury, has put together a list of 8 things to consider to ensure you have adequate protection if something does end up going wrong.

Here’s his top things to inspect:

1. BOILERS

Some insurers won’t insure your boiler if it’s over 15 years old. If yours is older, check it’s covered by your home insurance policy before you commit.

2. PLUMBING

Water leaks can cause lots of damage so finding and fixing any problems quickly is vital. Be aware of what any insurance policy does and doesn’t cover if you suffer a leak.

3. SECURITY

Your home could be left unsecure if the property's been broken into, if there's an attempted burglary or even due to something as simple as the door or window locks breaking. Be sure that your insurance covers an emergency response in that situation.

4. POWER SUPPLY

The old saying says 'you don't know what you've got til it's gone' and that's certainly true of the electricity! Without power in your home you could have no lighting, heating, washing or cooking facilities. Have things like candles and blankets (and maybe the odd takeaway menu!) handy just in case.

5. ROOF DAMAGE

The roof over your head protects you and your property from the elements. Swift action is needed to repair a roof which has been damaged as a result of sudden and unexpected events like severe weather. Check your cover includes that support.

6. VERMIN

No-one wants to share their home with uninvited guests such as rats, mice, bees, wasps or other vermin. See if your insurance covers you for their immediate removal.

7. TOILETS

A damaged toilet can make things pretty uncomfortable in the home. Good insurance should cover you if your facility is smashed, blocked, won’t flush, or if the waste pipe leaks or breaks.

8. ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION

If you’ve suffered an emergency which leaves your home unsafe, insecure or uncomfortable to stay in, then check your home emergency cover would pay for your alternative accommodation costs.

ANYTHING ELSE?

For NFU Mutual customers who have home emergency cover in place, there's a 24 hour helpline for customers to call if they suffer a 'home emergency'.

They'll arrange for an approved tradesperson to assess the damage as quickly as possible.
