Grants are being made available from Salisbury City Council and Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP).

Groups and individuals can apply for funding to train new coaches and host events as part of Salisbury 2020.

They're calling the scheme Project 20, with the application process now open.

The year of activities, to celebrate 800 years since Salisbury Cathedral moved from Old Sarum to its current site, have the theme of a 'city on the move'.

That's why sport's being made a key element - to recognise the 'strength and endeavour' of relocating a settlement.

Steve Boocock CEO of WASP said they're keen to get more people involved in running sporting activities:

"As part of Salisbury 2020: A City on the Move, Project 20 gives us a great opportunity to recruit and develop more coaches for Salisbury. The funding will support people in gaining skills and qualifications that in turn will enable more people to get active and take part in sport."

The funding for clubs, groups and schools can also go towards hosting things like open days and competitions, to give people opportunities to take on physical activities.

There's also a 'Sports Market' planned in August this year, in the city centre.

Cllr Jeremy Nettle, the Leader of Salisbury City Council said:

"Salisbury has an established wide diversity of sport clubs and groups and we want to see that continue to grow and flourish. Our Sports Market later this year will give clubs an opportunity to showcase their sport to our residents."
