Tisbury's new Nadder Centre opens up

Tisbury's new Nadder Centre opens up

The Wiltshire Council run community campus will start life as a leisure only facility, with other services gradually moving in.

Tisbury gets its new sports facilities today (Tuesday August 23rd) - as their community campus opens its doors.

The Nadder Centre, right next to the previous sports centre, will open for leisure only to begin with, but other services will gradually launch within the next few weeks as well.

John Thomson, deputy leader of Wiltshire Council, which will run the Centre, says this is great news for Tisbury:

"Tisbury for once can say that Wiltshire Council has really put some money into their community. And it has also been led by the community, right at the beginning it was very much the community who came up with the main items they wanted for the campus and how they wanted it done. Also, because we've got the primary school next door, it's marvellous facilities for them as well."

The old Tisbury Sports Centre (pictured below) closed on Sunday (August 21st) after years of serving local people and as it gradually got towards needing urgent upgrades.

The Nadder Centre is just next door to the previous sports centre as well as the primary school.

Councillor John Thomson explains what other facilities they have in the pipeline:

"The Library moves up there, the main events hall will open, we've got the business units opening, dance studios and then the children's centre will be moving and also the pre-school accommodation. There's also a cafe, which we're talking to a local business about to help run with us, as a joint venture, so there's going to be lots going on there."

It's all part of a countywide project to create more of these 'one stop shops' for local services, following on from Salisbury's Five Rivers.

Councillor John Thomson is leading the scheme and says there are other benefits too:

"The benefit to the Council is we're reducing the number of buildings we have, some which would have needed a lot of money spending on them. We're ending up with buildings which are very carbon friendly, they're a lot cheaper to run. This one has biomass boilers, so very good on the renewable front. It also means that we're bringing all services into one building, which means we can encourage the community to get more involved in running these facilities."
