Idmiston, Porton and Gomeldon decide their future

Local people have been voting on whether to approve their Neighbourhood Plan.

Three South Wiltshire villages have been voting on their own future this week - coming up with their ideas for the area they live in for the next ten years.

The parish covering Idmiston, Porton and Gomeldon has held a referendum to decide whether to accept their Neighbourhood Plan.

We're told the parish council were surprised and pleased to have had a turnout of 47% of residents getting involved.

  • Votes cast: 809
  • In favour: 677 (83.7%)
  • Against: 132 (16.3%)

A spokesperson for the parish council said:

"The Neighbourhood Plan has been compiled over many years by a team of dedicated people who consulted widely to determine the way forward for the three villages of Porton, Idmiston & Gomeldon. Thank you to all who voted and especially to all those involved in bringing this Plan to completion."

Idmiston is the latest parish to go to the polls over their local Plan, after Downton did the same last year.

The main points that the document aims to follow covers a few aspects of village life:

  • Provide additional facilities such as open and green spaces and sports and youth facilities
  • Address the need to regulate the volume of vehicles using the village roads at peak times, together with the problem of a distinct lack of parking provision and the issue of speeding vehicles. Provision of off-road parking at the two primary schools
  • Only the sites identified by parishioners should be permitted for housing development
  • Ensure the maintenance of village separation and identities and the rural feel of the parish
  • Protect historical buildings in the Parish and pursue conservation status for Idmiston village
