Salisbury runners will be taking part in the 54321 Trail Marathon with massive distances to cover

Be careful on the roads today (Sunday 13th August) in Salisbury, there's over 1,000 runners out on the streets.

They're taking part in the 54321 Trail Marathon around the city, with runners tackling massive distances for the 22nd year.

The races are in aid of the Firefighters Charity as Salisbury Fire Station host the event.

On offer are four runs:

  • 21K Half Marathon
  • 33K Trail
  • 42K Marathon
  • 50K Ultra Marathon

There are also walking option for the above distances as well as a 5K and 10K walk.

As well as being a catchy name for a race event, Race Director Ludo Macaulay says that 54321 has a specific meaning for Wiltshire.

"Salisbury is known for it's five rivers and then the route goes over four hills, we pass through three country estates, past two castle and then the Cathedral. That is then taken in on a circular route, mostly off road, so we thought 'you count yourself down from 54321.'"

The first load of entrants start at 8.00am for the larger distances, which Ludo say's is a surprising amount.

"From the usual marathon being the main event - this year, for the first time, the Ultra which is a 50K 31 mile off road trail was the first to reach 300 runners. I don't know why, but they find it very popular!"

All races aim to be done by 6.00pm and if you want to watch or just be careful of the runners, you can see all the routes here: salisbury54321.com/routes
