Former Army Major from Tilshead has already got two medals in Toronto

A former Army Major from Tilshead has struck gold at the Invictus Games.

Cornelia Oosthuizen is over in Toronto for the Paralympic Style competition.

She is part of the 90 strong British squad over in North America and served as an Education Officer attached to 3rd Battalion the Mercian Regiment in Tidworth before leaving the Army.

She was medically discharged after developing a neurological condition which causes her to be in constant pain.

Cornelia took part in the Wheelchair Tennis Doubles on Monday (25th September) and scooped bronze, her first medal in the games.

It wasn't to be her last though and yesterday secured the gold in the golf, a sport she only took up in June.

She started practicing at Tidworth Garrison Golf Club and Manager Geoff Johnson say's she has a pretty inspiring story.

"Cornelia, last night won the gold medal for golf at the games. What makes this remarkable is that she only joined the Club in June 2017. At this point she had never played a game of golf before but had the drive and passion to want to play and represent the UK in golf at the Games but required an official handicap. She started with an unofficial club handicap of 46 with a target of 36 that she needed to get to in order to compete. Within eight weeks she managed to do that and better and received her official competitive handicap of 34."

"We think this is a fantastic achievement from, in essence, a complete beginner. Well done Cornelia!"

She's in action today in the Hand Cycling hoping to clinch another medal but speaking before the games, Cornelia was just over the moon to be competing.

"Sport has always meant a lot to me. It's always played a bit part of my life and it's just really wonderful way to have that element of my life re-introduced in a very big way, and it's certainly a big moral boost."
