Old Sarum road closure will bring crossing and cycle path

A month long road closure is likely to cause some disruption through Old Sarum.

The Portway is shut between the junction for Sherbourne Drive by the Kia garage (pictured here), right down to the roundabout for the Winterbournes.

That's in place from now until the 15th of December.

That's so that a new pedestrian crossing and cycle path can be built close to the nature reserve and for the new housing there.

Here's the reasoning that's been given to us by Wiltshire Council:

"There is no crossing currently in the vicinity of the works by Throgmorton Hall. The works are to provide an informal crossing point and a shared pedestrian/cyclist path between Green Lane and Sherbourne Drive."

We're told that's such a long section closed because of the lack of turning points. They've said:

"Given there are no residential areas nor space to turn between the Winterbourne Roundabout and Green Lane, it has been signed from there."

The Portway is a popular cut through towards the A338, but diversion routes are signposted.
