A&E services at Salisbury District Hospital rated highly by patients

People who used the emergency services during the summer have taken part in a survey about their care.

Patients who used Salisbury District Hospital's A&E department this summer have been rating their experiences.

Around 850 people who went through the emergency treatment centre have taken part in a survey for the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

They've rated our hospital as 'better than other trusts' in most areas, including the respect and dignity they're shown, the explanations they're given by doctors and nurses and their overall experience.

The only category where Salisbury was rated 'about the same' as other hospital was in the advice given to patients when they leave A&E.

Here's the full set of results:

  • Arrival at the emergency department - including the handover time from an ambulance and the privacy patients got at reception: 8.5 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Waiting times: 6.5 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Doctors and nurses - asking patients how they felt about their experience with a medical professional: 8.8 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Care and treatment - including pain control, emotional supprt, privacy and involvement in decisions: 8.4 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Tests - how quickly were they carried out and how quickly where the results explained: 9 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Hospital environment and facilities - such as cleanliness and access to food and drink: 8.9 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Leaving the emergency department - including explanation about further treatments, medication and assessing living arrangements: 7.1 out of 10 (ABOUT THE SAME as other trusts)
  • Respect and dignity: 9.4 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)
  • Experience overall: 8.5 out of 10 (BETTER than other trusts)

"Despite significant pressure throughout the year, our A&E continues to provide very high standards of care that match the very best in the country. Looking at the way our patients have viewed our service, from the moment they arrive in the department to the time they leave, it is pleasing to see that our patients have rated their overall experience highly.

"While we will always look to make improvements through our action plan, this is an excellent report which highlights the professionalism and commitment of our staff and the way in which they look after people who need emergency care at Salisbury District Hospital. I want to thank them for their efforts and all that they do for our local community."
