Work on a huge new teaching block at the Stonehenge School in Amesbury is due to begin as soon as the next half term holiday.

The £6 and a half million project will see the number of places available at the secondary rise from 700 now, up to around 1,150.

The new block will include 24 new classrooms, four of which will be ICT suites, as well as new offices, a reception area and a glass ceiling atrium.

Stonehenge School is regularly over-subscribed and it's expected that the extra places will be needed as Amesbury grows and there's an influx of military families coming to the Salisbury Plain are over the next few years.

The school's also rated 'Good' by Ofsted for more than a decade.

Contractors Interserve Construction Ltd. has been chosen to deliver the project - they've got experience in similar schemes at large schools across the South of England.

The building work's expected to last through 2018.

In a joint statement, Headteacher Nigel Roper and Chair of Governors Kelly Godwin said:

"Everyone is looking forward to 2018 with a great deal of enthusiasm and optimism. This extra building will provide 24 new teaching rooms, four of these fully equipped ICT suites. We'll also gain additional staff workrooms and offices, a brand new reception area and a two storey atrium with a glass ceiling to let in as much natural light as possible. It's a superb transformation and an exciting investment which will benefit the Amesbury community for years."
