Serious fire on Downton High Street

The road has had to be closed while emergency services dealt with a blaze at the Costcutter shop.

Emergency services have been dealing with a serious fire on Downton High Street this morning (Tuesday June 12th).

Firefighters were called at 8.50am with police on the scene to help with a road closure.

The fire started within the Costcutter shop there, causing severe damage.

The flames spread into the flat above too, with the building 100% affected by smoke and heat.

Smoke damage has also been reported in the property next door.

Wiltshire Police closed the road for around three hours, but it has now re-opened to traffic.

Fire crews are likely to remain on the scene for the rest of today though.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue tell us crews from Salisbury, Ferndown, Fordingbridge, Ringwood and St Marys have been drafted in to help.

An investigation is now underway into the cause of the fire.

The Red Cross support vehicle has been sent out to help the occupants of the flat.

Fire crews have also been checking for hotspots within the building - they've used thermal imaging cameras inside and used ventilation fans to clear smoke.

An aerial appliance has been keeping an eye on the damage from above, as well as removing roof tiles for better access.
