Two young girls have each won £2,500 to renovate a garden in the area, with charity Rise:61 at the head of the project.

A garden in the heart of Bemerton Heath has been getting a makeover at the weekend, with the community pitching in.

The area of grass on Gainsborough Close has started to be dug up in the hopes that once it's finished, it'll be a place that anyone in the area can enjoy - young or old.

Charity Rise:61 are behind the makeover, a local youth group who want to keep everyone involved in the community and create a place that is enjoyable for all.

"We come alongside young people in the estate of Bemerton Heath, Salisbury, providing positive opportunities where they can tell a different story with their lives.

"Be it through sport, music, events or micro-enterprises, we empower young people to redirect their futures.

"Raising up a generation who will help others succeed in the years to come."

The garden could not have been started had it not been for two girls who attend Rise:61's 'Life Group' on Monday nights.

Ioni Drewitt and Tilly Bell, both aged 12, applied to the Burns Price Foundation - a charitable organisation that provides grants to young people - for money towards creating a space for those in Bemerton Heath.

Despite putting the effort into the application, both were shocked to receive £2,500 EACH towards projects in their community.

"It was really surprising, we didn't expect that money to come in through the post just through putting that application in."

The project is being led by Rise:61 with help from Wiltshire Council’s Resident Engagement Team and is being developed and delivered by Gary Lamont and his team from ‘Forager’s Farm’s, a fantastic social enterprise that has experience of creating community gardens all over the region.

Over the weekend (8th,9th and 10th June), work began on the garden with everyone getting their hands dirty and mucking in.

The garden will be built over a series of 3 'Big Builds' over the coming months with the aim to celebrate the finishing of the build with a 'Big Bash on Bemerton' in September.
