Man arrested in connection with Downton shop fire

A 22 year old man's been questioned on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

A man's been arrested in connection with the fire at Downton's Costcutter shop.

The 22 year old local man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life yesterday afternoon (Wednesday June 13th).

He's since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Fire crews were called out to the shop on the High Street just before 9.00am on Tuesday morning (June 12th).

The store was left severely damaged and the flames spread to the flat above too.


Wiltshire Police are still investigating the cause of the blaze and have asked anyone who might have been in the shop on Monday morning to get in touch.

DC Ben Brewster said:

"Were you in the shop on Monday? We are particularly interested in hearing from any customers that were in the shop between 7.00am and 8.30am on that morning."
