A Bulford soldier from Ghana is taking to a bike to raise money for an IT suite and library to be built in his penniless home village.

Nyame Ayeh Assuon, known as Sony, is going to 'cycle' the 3,200 miles from the cathedral city to Ghana.

He's going to be on a spin bike outside the Guildhall today (7th July) with special guests from around Salisbury and Ghana!

They include:

  • The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Salisbury Councillor Mr Mike Osment
  • The MP for Salisbury and South Wiltshire Hon. John Glen
  • The Ghana High Commissioner His Excellence Papa Owusu Ankomak

Sony, a Lance Corporal in the Royal Corps of Signals, aged 37, said:

"I am so lucky to have joined the British army and become an IT professional.

"I wanted to give that opportunity to the people from my home in Ghana and in 2014 I founded the Assuon Foundation Trust, a registered charity.

"Everyone has been very generous and I hope to attract lots of people to join in the spinning event and to find sponsorship. Lots of local businesses and organisations are
supporting the event.

"There is a lot of talent in Ghana, but the children don't have access to computers or any IT equipment.

"We have bought a site for the IT suite which is on the same spot where I went to school and had lessons underneath a tree."

Cyclists will be taking to the bike between 8am and 6pm, taking it in turns to spin the 3,200 miles to Ghana.

They hope to raise £1 for every mile cycled to support the Assuon Foundation Trust which is a charity dedicated to improving the standard of education in a village in Ghana.
