Police closed the road due to poor visibility earlier, but the local fire service aren't allowed to access the main area of the blaze.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue tell us they had 'dozens' of calls last night (Thursday July 12th) about the blazes.

Crews were also called out a number of times to alarm activations caused by the smoke.

FIRE CREWS CAN'T ATTEND:

As the fire is within the 'impact area' of Salisbury Plain, they can't get to the site to fully tackle the blaze.

But they have been at the scene in Shrewton and Market Lavington to try and prevent the flames spreading out of that area.

The fire also can't be tackled by dumping water from the sky, due to aircraft restrictions over the training area.

CAUSING TRAVEL PROBLEMS:

Drifting smoke from a fire on Salisbury Plain meant it was unsafe for drivers for a time.

The road was reopened a short time later.

Janet, who lives in Shrewton, told Spire FM the smoke was "atrocious" and Sharon told us "you could smell it last night in Durrington."

Others on social media say they can smell the smoke in Trowbridge and even as far as Frome in Somerset.

Claire Young from Tilshead sent us the picture at the top of page, showing the smoke in her garden.
