This dramatic photo captures the moment a vehicle carrying straw went up in flames on the Packway yesterday evening (6th August).

Emergency services were called to the scene near Rollestone Camp around 6.00pm.

It's understood the driver managed to escape the cab before the flames took hold.

Fire fighters including those from Salisbury and Tisbury as well as Fordingbridge tackled the flames as 44 bales of hay caught alight.

The fire also spread to nearby fields bone dry from the hot weather.

The water carrier from Wilton also attended as did the MOD's water carrier from Boscombe Down.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing across the area.

There was praise on social media from the local farmer for the way crews dealt with the incident:

ROAD REMAINS CLOSED:

The Packway is likely to stay shut throughout today (Tuesday August 7th) due to the incident.

It was initially closed while the blaze was dealt with, with recovery arranged.

But that's now been delayed as the lorry is still smouldering and needs further dampening down.

Once the vehicle's cleared, the road will also need resurfacing, as it's been damaged by the heat of the fire.

The latest on how that's affecting travel can be found on our dedicated Travel page.

This picture taken by Wilton Fire Station shows just how badly damaged the lorry is.
