The scheme's being 're-focussed' to make improvements to the area which was affected by the nerve agent incident.

Swindon and Wiltshire's Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) has agreed on their latest ideas, with a view to putting in a planning application before Christmas.

Those plans include relocating the Library to the empty British Heart Foundation shop on Fisherton Street, building a new hotel and opening up the Market Walk.

A new hotel, gym and the relocated Library is planned for the site of the former BHF shop on Fisherton Street

There's also ideas to double the number of residential units planned for the site, build a 7 screen cinema and bring in more shops and restaurants.

Paddy Bradley from SWLEP says it'll make a real difference:

"Just think about it, you're in the Market Square and you're going to look across to see that entrance way into a revamped Maltings area with new public realm, much more pleasant for people to walk around. It will be fantastic! It will just be what Salisbury wants and take the city beyond what it is now into something better.

"There's never a point in any place, just to say 'we've taken a bit of a hit, so we'll go back to where we were before'. You've always got to take the advantage of going beyond so we've got to get it right. We've got to get a really well focussed development, which is a mixture of retail, leisure, culture and residential."

Here's how it's hoped the redeveloped Market Walk will look

The previous version of the redevelopment scheme was drawn up in 2016 and would have started with improvements to the Central Car Park.

At that time, £6.1 million of funding was put forward by SWLEP towards the first phase.

That money's now being re-directed towards this new project.

Here's how the two schemes compare:

Pauline Church, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for economic development and Salisbury recovery, said:

"We're delighted to be working with partners on a new approach to the redevelopment of The Maltings, in Salisbury.

"As a prime city centre location, The Maltings redevelopment is a vital site in the regeneration and economic growth for Salisbury. The new scheme is designed to attract new businesses and visitors into the city."

It's hoped that the planning application will go in to Wiltshire Council in December 2018.

If that goes through with no issues, work could start on site in May 2019, with completion in 2021.
