Salisbury Remembers: Parade to honour the fallen

At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, hundreds have gathered to remember them.

Britain has fallen silent this morning (11th November) to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday - with Salisbury holding a special service at the Cenotaph.

The Annual Remembrance Sunday Service has been held at the War Memorial in Salisbury Guildhall Square.

The ceremony, led by the Salisbury Branch of the Royal British Legion and supported by Salisbury City Council, commemorates the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

At 11.00am, people gathered at the War Memorial for a 2 minute silence followed by prayers.

Serving and veteran military personnel, along with cadets, representatives of emergency services and community leaders have taken part

The Guildhall will be the backdrop to the prayers, with hundreds of poppies on the columns.

The parade then processed to St. Thomas's Church for the Sunday Service, where Armistice commemorations continue:

The Mayor of Salisbury Cllr Mike Osment said;

"The Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service is a timely opportunity for people to come together to remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country.

"This year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War, and we remember not only those who died in that war, but all subsequent conflicts too."

Salisbury and South Wiltshire have been covered with poppies over the last week.
