The school's moved from Figheldean to a bigger site, ready to accommodate more children from military families.

The start of the art building's gone up on land gifted by the MOD, right next to what's becoming an estate of houses for soldiers and their dependants.

The new St Michael's has space for 420 pupils, in 14 classrooms.

There's also an assembly hall, dance studio, technology room, sports pitch, multi-use games area and an outdoor trail for the children to use.

St Michael's Headteacher Nicky Phillips has been telling Spire FM how pleased they are to be settling in:

To mark the official opening, a ribbon's been cut by three pupils from the school - including the oldest and youngest on the roll.

Tina Evans, CEO of the Trust said:

"This has always been about more than creating a building. At Salisbury Plain Academies we are about building collaborative communities, and the new school at St Michael's Larkhill embodies that ambition. We couldn't be happier with the school and are delighted that families in the area have such a wonderful educational resource and community hub to enjoy."

Lots of schools locally are having expansions, upgrades and new facilities to prepare for an influx of troops and families in the next year or so.

Many of the places at St Michael's will be taken up by regiments moving to Salisbury Plain for Germany.

Mark Duddy, Army Basing Programme (ABP) Director said:

"The completion and occupation of this wonderful facility, built on land gifted by the MOD, for the children of Larkhill and the surrounding areas is a milestone to be celebrated. In addition to the provision of 'behind the wire' facilities in the local Garrison we are also investing in over 900 new houses across Salisbury Plain. The ABP is supporting the services required in the local community to enable the safe return of service personnel and their families from Germany to Wiltshire in 2019. I hope the children enjoy their new learning environment."
