Speaking to BBC Panorama Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, Dean Haydon, said the nerve agent could have caused thousands of deaths.

In the documentary, the DAC said the amount that was in the bottle could have been devastating to the community.

"When we found it there was a significant amount of Novichok contained within the bottle."

The Metropolitan Police DAC was then asked how many people it could have killed.

"It's difficult to say, you know, possibly into the thousands.

"The amount that was in the bottle and the way it was applied to the Skripals home address was completely reckless."

Five people were hospitalised between March and July with novichok poisoning, with Durrington mum Dawn Sturgess dying in July from the contamination.

Two men have been identified as suspects in the spy poisoning case, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov.

The Crown Prosecution Service has charged both men with offences related to what happened but it is believed they were travelling under aliases.

New CCTV has been released of the two men in Salisbury.

Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey has also spoken out about the effect the nerve agent had on him and his life.
