Police are appealing for witnesses after the man was left bleeding with a head injury.

Last night (4th December), at around 8.10pm, the security guard approached a group of teenagers at the Salisbury Christmas Market.

He asked them to leave as he believed they were involved in a shoplifting incident earlier that evening.

One of the group then spat in the direction of the man in his 60s.

Another then hit him over the head with a sharp object, knocking him to the ground and leaving him with a bleeding left ear.

ARREST

Police arrived and arrested a suspect near the railway station.

A 17-year-old boy from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

SPATE OF INCIDENTS AT SALISBURY CHRISTMAS MARKET

This incident follows a disorder at the Ice Rink on Saturday (1st December), the second to involve a group of young people.

Ice Rink Salisbury
Police are now cracking down on anti-social behaviour after the incident at Salisbury Ice Rink.

Community Co-ordinator A/Sgt Alan Cromwell, from Wiltshire South Community Policing Team, said:

"We have been made aware of a small group of young people who have been out in Salisbury in the evenings causing trouble around the Christmas market.

"This anti-social behaviour and criminal damage is proving disruptive and frustrating for local people and visitors, who are trying to enjoy the festivities.

"I want to reassure the public that we are actively working to crackdown on this unacceptable behaviour and have been working with the Youth Offending Team to tackle the problem.

"We are also carrying out extra patrols in the city centre in the evenings to hopefully provide a deterrent to the small minority who appear to want to spoil the fun of the wider community."

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said:

“This incident is subject to an ongoing police investigation. We’re in discussions with the contractor delivering the event management of the ice rink and Christmas Market to ensure there is sufficient security at the busiest periods.

“The ice rink and market have been open for five days and are both extremely popular and we hope that everyone that visits will enjoy the festivities on offer.”

Anyone with information about the assault on the security guard is asked to contact PC Hollie Elliott, from the Wiltshire South Community Policing Team, on 101, quoting crime reference 54180115027.
