The body of the mare was discovered on Hale Purlieu near Fordingbridge yesterday (12th December).

It's understood a member of the public discovered the pony.

An agister went to investigate and found the mare lying dead in a gorse bush with a number of wounds which appear to have been caused by dispersed shotgun pellets.

A resident heard shotgun fire the previous evening around 7.00pm.

One theory is the someone was poaching the deer and shot the pony by accident.

Several herds of deer have spotted on the National Trust Land in recent days.

"I felt sick and angry when I found out, I thought there was no way I'm going to sit by and do nothing."

The National Trust owns the land where the incident happened.

In a statement, they've said:

“We are saddened to confirm that, on Wednesday 12 December, a New Forest pony was reported dead by the New Forest Verderers.

"As this is now a police matter we are unable to comment further."
