Salisbury's football and rugby results: Jan 5th 2019

Published by Faye Tryhorn at 8:35am 6th January 2019.

Here's how Salisbury FC, Salisbury Rugby, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Amesbury Town and Laverstock and Ford got on this weekend.

For Salisbury FC, there was a trip to Merthyr Town in the Southern League Premier Division South.

The visiting side side took the lead through Tom Whelan on 48 minutes.

Then four minutes before the end of normal time, Jack Sparkes scored a direct free kick to seal the three points.

Merthyr did get a consolation goal late into stoppage time.

That result keeps Salisbury 3rd in the league table, safely within the play-off spots, but having played more games than some of the teams around them.

Manager Steve Claridge was pleased with the win too, posting on Twitter afterwards:

In the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League, Bemerton Heath Harlequins played out a goalless draw against Christchurch to bring home a point from their away game.

Harlequins sit 14th in the table off the back of that result.

In Division One, Downton had the weekend off, but there were games for Amesbury Town and Laverstock and Ford.

The Blues were up against US Portsmouth at Bonneymead Park, looking to build on their decent form during 2018.

The final score in that game was 2-2:

That point and a win for AFC Stoneham yesterday means Amesbury are knocked down to second place in the table by virtue of goal difference.

For Laverstock and Ford it was also a disappointing day at the office, as they made the short trip to Ringwood Town.

Lavvy went down 1-0 to keep them 12th in the table.

Salisbury Rugby were back in action in the South West League 1 East this weekend, against Royal Wootton Bassett away from home.

The green and whites lost 27-10, pushing them down to 11th in the table.
