New special needs school opens in Salisbury

Springfields South has been set up to meet a demand for places for autistic children in our part of Wiltshire.

The new school's opened this week (Monday February 4th) within the grounds of Sarum Academy.

They've created classrooms in an unused building there, with around 20 pupils registered there at the moment.

Springfields South is a satellite site of the Springfields Academy in Calne, with some of their staff moving over from the other school.

Many of the pupils would have had to travel from South Wiltshire up to the school and back every day for the specialist lessons until now.

Headteacher Jon Hamp says having a site in Salisbury will make a huge difference:

"It's absolutely fantastic seeing children coming through the doors and their parents delighted that they have a school. That's what we wanted and that's what's happened.

"The travel and distance was a big part for me. Anyone in education wants children to have a good school but it's also about finding a facility that they can get to quickly and easily. It could take children well over an hour to get to the Calne centre whereas in Salisbury, it's much closer for the majority of our students."

Springfields South welcomes children aged between five and twelve with autism and various other learning associated difficulties.

The centre was commissioned by Wiltshire Council after recognising that more provision was needed in the South of the county.

After almost a year of planning the school has now built close links with their Bemerton Heath neighbours and has plans to expand too.

Springfields Headteacher Jon Hamp has been telling us more about their excitement at opening in Salisbury:

They currently have four classrooms, but site development projects that will allow for more learning space.

The aim is to eventually cater for up to 60 pupils.

Laura Mayes, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for children's services said:

"I'm sure pupils will love their new school and enjoy their learning in spacious bright classrooms. This is a much needed resource in the south of the county.

"We will continue to work together to make Springfields South a success and create further projects for children and young people in the future. We hope Springfields South is the start of some great work across the county to ensure we can provide for all our children and young people with special needs."
