Salisbury special school in line to become centre of excellence

Wiltshire Council's looking to invest £20 million in the provision of special education needs.

As part of the plans Salisbury's special school, Exeter House, would become a centre of excellence, meaning they would be able to offer support, advice and resources to other schools,

Headteacher Matt Sambrook said:

"As a centre of excellence we would be able to meet, not only, increasing need and demand for Special Educational provision but also provide comprehensive outreach beyond our setting - working extensively with mainstream schools, resource bases, parents and other professionals.

Through this approach we would build a community of understanding and possibility where inclusion is at the forefront of what we do."

The current provision for special education needs is being pushed to the limits, mainly due to the population growth and growing demand.

Because of that many pupils are schooled outside of Wiltshire - Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children's services at the Council, told Spire FM that would improve under the proposals:

"That's terribly sad, both for the inconvenient but also the fact they're not being educated where they live.

What will be brilliant now is that we'll be able to expand provision and ensure our Wiltshire's children are being educated in their own county."

The consultation on the plans - which also include building a new centre of excellence at Rowdeford near Devizes for the north of the county - will run until 1 March 2019.

You can have your say by going to Wiltshire Council's consultation page or by emailing

Wiltshire Council's cabinet will then meet this spring to consider the proposals in the light of the responses to the consultation.
