JAILED: Salisbury man admits robbing elderly woman

32 year old Matthew Derrick pulled his 74 year old victim to the floor to steal her handbag.

The robbery happened close to the United Reformed Church on Fisherton Street in March 2018.

Derrick, from Pullman Drive on Bemerton Heath, attacked the woman from behind in an alleyway, grabbing her bag and knocking her down before running away.

SENTENCED TODAY:

Derrick appeared at Salisbury Crown Court today (Tuesday February 12th) to be sentenced.

He was jailed for 20 months.

Detective Constable Ben Brewster, from Salisbury CID, said:

"Luckily the victim wasn't injured, but the incident left a permanent mental scar, causing her to change her daily routines and to fear leaving her house for months afterwards.

"Today's sentence will mean she can try to regain her confidence and integrate herself back into the community."
