The Salisbury police officer poisoned with novichok has been speaking to Spire FM about his recovery.

In his first local interview since the nerve agent attack, Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey said he and his family 'had a bit of a bad year' in 2018.

But from that incident 11 months ago, he wants to do something positive - and give back to Salisbury District Hospital, who looked after him following the poisoning.

He's decided to run a marathon to raise money for the Stars Appeal:

"I owe the hospital, and in particular Radnor Ward, so much. They were incredible in fixing me. If I'm doing a marathon, which is something back by doing this fundraiser."

Within just a couple of days he had smashed his fundraising target and the total just keeps rising.

Nick says his recovery is 'going well' and he's finding running is a great way to help with it

It's currently up to almost £8,000, ahead of the run this August, which is part of the Salisbury 54321 event.

Nick says he chose this particular event as it's in Salisbury - and it was the whole city that felt the effects of the novichok incident.

Nick was cared for at Salisbury District Hospital for two and a half weeks following exposure to the nerve agent.

He says there aren't any physical effects from what happened, but that running is helping him with some of the mental recovery.

He's been speaking to Spire FM's Faye Tryhorn and had his wife Sarah beside him:

Nick says the idea of a marathon is 'daunting' but he's very keen to all he can for the Stars Appeal.

He says having our support really makes all the difference:

"Every time I see every comment, every share and every donation, it's really inspiring me to keep going. The response to (my fundraising) has been phenomenal."

The Stars Appeal is grateful for the backing of someone like Nick too:

DS Nick Bailey has set up his online fundraising page on JustGiving.
