In just over two weeks, the site which houses Wiltshire Council and Salisbury Police will be smoke free.

On the 13th March, staff and visitors will no longer be able to smoke anywhere on the premises of Bourne Hill.

The day also coincides with National No Smoking Day 2019.

Over the next two weeks, the authority will be putting up signs around the building to tell the public about their changes.

It's part of a cut down on the deathly habit in any Wiltshire Council building across the county, with plans to make them all smoke free by 2020.

Staff members will no longer be able to smoke on site.

Jerry Wickham, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for public health, said:

"As a modern public sector organisation, it's the right time to be make this change.

"Not only do we want it to help encourage people to quit smoking for good, but we hope it makes our main hubs more welcoming for visitors."

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said:

"Smoking remains the primary cause of preventable illness and premature deaths in the UK and is significantly associated with diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), various forms of cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke.

"Exposure to second-hand smoke is also known to increase the risk of these conditions and contributes to serious illnesses among children, such as asthma.

"Smoking is the biggest single cause of inequalities in death rates between the rich and poor and it contributes to more 600 premature deaths in Wiltshire per year."

Cigarette smoking
Only vaping will be allowed on the Salisbury site... goodbye to cigarettes!

Vaping will be permitted at the site but away from main entrances, with staff having a designated area for it.

County Hall in Trowbridge and Monkton Park in Chippenham will also be removing smoking from their sites.
