The birds were discovered on the town path at the weekend (WARNING - graphic images).

The birds were found laying together in the water by a member of the public on the popular route from Harnham to Salisbury on Sunday morning (17th March).

Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital were called but there was nothing to be done for the birds and staff helped retrieve the bodies.

The charity says on closer inspection "it was obvious they'd both been shot."

Both swans suffered wounds close to their head.

Marilyn Korkis from the centre believes they were deliberately targeted.

"I just can't believe someone could commit such an atrocious act, these were a breeding pair of Swans who were well loved in the area and produced 4 cygnets last year and would have been getting ready to breed again this year."

Wiltshire Police are investigating:

"We are aware of an incident in the area of Queen Elizabeth Gardens in which two swans were found dead. Our rural crime team are looking into it and ask anyone with information to contact PC Emily Thomas on 101 quoting log 117 of 17/3.’"
