An initiative that'll help prevent food waste and offer produce to those in need, is opening on Bemerton Heath today (April 16th).

A Community Fridge will be unveiled by Mayor, Mike Osment, at 10am this morning at St Michael's Community Centre.

It works by allowing people to donate food - then anyone can go to take food out.

The average UK family wastes £810 a year by throwing away food and drink, and £3 billion is wasted by food sectors, so, Community Fridges offer a way of sharing items in the hope of reducing that amount.

Produce including fruit and vegetables can be donated, but St Michael's will also allow people to offer food they have baked themselves - in these cases kitchens may need to be checked to make sure everything meets hygiene standards.

Jenny Bolwell, Vice Chair of the Bemerton Heath Residents Association, told Spire FM this scheme isn't like the food banks that are already being used by people in need:

"We can take donations from people that may want to cook, or bring things in. Or we can get contributions from supermarkets.

It's not about a voucher. You can just turn up, if you see something in the fridge, you can help yourself."

The fridge will be available during the cafe opening hours - which are 11am-2pm Monday to Friday - but you'll have to pre-warn them if you want to take your own baked goods.

POVERTY DROP-IN

Not only will the Community Fridge get its launch today, so will a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) drop-in.

CAP is an award winning, national debt counselling charity offering free help and advice to those who need it.

St Paul's in Salisbury already runs a similar scheme.

Jenny Bolwell said

"Anyone having problems with debt, anyone wishing to talk about it but not sure whether they're entitlted to this benefit, or that benefit, they can contact me.

And, if it's a private conversation they wish to have with me they can book that too."

The debt drop-in will also be available during the cafe opening hours.
