Keith Cutler was summoned - but he's already conducting the same trial!

The resident judge for Salisbury and Winchester admitted the mix-up to a jury at another hearing at Salisbury Crown Court.

He said he'd been selected for jury service for a case due to start next Tuesday (April 23rd).

Only trouble is, Mr Cutler is also due to be the judge at the same hearing and he asked 'to be excused'.

He said to the jury at Salisbury:

"I told the jury central summoning bureau that I thought I would be inappropriate, seeing I happened to be the judge and knew all the papers.

"They wrote back to me. They picked up on the fact I was the judge but said 'Your appeal for refusal has been rejected but you could apply to the resident judge', but I told them, 'I am the resident judge'. I had to phone them up and they realised it was a mistake!"

Keith Cutler's been the resident judge here since 2009, as well as being a lay canon at Salisbury Cathedral.

He was awarded a CBE in 2010.

But despite those credentials, he is still eligible to called up for jury service.

The only occupation that's completely exempt from being summoned in England and Wales is diplomats.
