Details unveiled as stage two of the significant upgrade and extension of the city based campus gets underway.

Phase 2 of the redevelopment of the Salisbury site on Southampton Road has now begun.

It was officially launched on Friday (17th May 2019)

  • £7.5m is being spent on the renovation and expansion
  • That included a new 3 storey building that will add an extra 3,200m2 of space to the college

The new building will comprise:

  • Advanced science and engineering labs
  • Construction workshops
  • A TV studio
  • Canteen facilities
  • Conferencing spaces and a welcoming modern entrance to the existing buildings

It's been designed to 'seamlessly link' into the existing college buildings.

TIMELINE OF WORKS SO FAR

  • MAY 2019 - Internal refurbishment and cladding works have been finished this month
  • JUNE 2019 - Demolition of existing middle building
  • SEPT 2019 - Works begin on the new building
  • JUNE 2020 - Demolition of existing building
  • SEPT 2020 - New campus comes into use for the first time

Principal, Amanda Burnside told Spire FM News more about the next part of the redevelopment project:

"We've successfully complete the refurb and the re-cladding, which has been great, and everyone comments on the stunning difference it makes to the campus. Now we see some real change, in terms of a brand new 3 storey building, happening over the coming months."

"The existing middle building, as people drive up the road, will be demolished. The new build will be built, and then Phase 3 of the project is the demolition of the Bourne Building, what we call the old Arts School. So all the brown brick buildings will go, to be replaced by the state of the art new campus."

John Glen, Salisbury and South Wiltshire's MP, and Economic Secretary to the Treasury says around £20m in total is being invested into Wiltshire, and he told Spire FM News that the launch and investment in Phase 2 was an excellent sign for the local area:

"To see the transformation of this estate here on Southampton Road is great..."

"We've seen the quality of teaching here has been judged to be good, on two occasions, on the way to outstanding. This new building rather reinforces that there are some real high quality qualifications and skills available that match the profile of jobs at Boscombe, at Porton, and across the public services that we need here in south Wiltshire."

Salisbury MP John Glen officially launched Phase 2 of the campus development project on Friday (17th May) along with Peter Wragg from the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) and other VIPs and dignitaries.

Phase one of the redevelopment project saw the existing buildings re-clad and refurbished during the last six months.

This project is part of over £24m of investment secured through the SWLEP to increase Further and Higher Education provision at the College on its Salisbury and Lackham sites.
