Police have been dealing with an incident on the westbound carriageway (picture from Google Street View).

Emergency services were called out to the A303 at around 3.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday June 4th).

Wiltshire Police tell us a white Vauxhall Corsa was found down a steep bank.

The incident was reported by a passing lorry driver.

The driver of the Corsa, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

ROAD RE-OPENED:

Investigations have been carried out at the scene of the incident, and the A303 was re-opened to traffic at 8.45pm.

Some drivers had reported being stuck in the queueing traffic for over two hours.

The eastbound wasn't closed, but there were tailbacks in that direction.

WITNESS APPEAL:

Wiltshire Police are now asking anyone with information about what happened to get in touch with them.

At this stage, officers say it's unclear why the car came off the road, or in fact when the collision first happened.

If you can help, you're asked to call 101, quoting log number 193 of June 4th.
