Salisbury Library plans REJECTED

Salisbury Library plans REJECTED

Published by Faye Tryhorn at 3:38pm 19th June 2019.

A planning application to relocate the city's Library to Fisherton Street has been narrowly turned down.

The plans would have also included an 86 bed Travelodge hotel and a gym.

It's the first planned phase of the redevelopment for the whole of Salisbury's Maltings area.

An artists impression of how the new development would have looked

Wiltshire Council's Strategic Planning Committee has today (Wednesday June 19th) been rejected by 4 votes to 3, with one councillor abstaining.

It's been turned down on the grounds of building design, and it not being in keeping with the surrounding area.

The Library plans had been recommended for approval by officers and were supported by Salisbury City Council.

In the same meeting, councillors did however, 'endorse' a masterplan for the whole redevelopment plan.

The plan was written following a consultation with local stakeholders and residents.

It's not a formal planning application but does give the go ahead in principle for more detailed plans to be drawn up.

Plans to relocate Salisbury Library are 'on hold' for the moment

Pauline Church, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and South Wiltshire Recovery, said:

"While I'm pleased that the masterplan for The Maltings and Central Car Park has been approved, I'm disappointed that the developer Nuveen's revised planning application for the first phase of redevelopment at The Maltings has been declined, particularly on grounds of design, which is a matter of personal taste.

"The plans would have unlocked the redevelopment of Market Walk and the wider Maltings area, but these plans are now on hold, and this has the potential to delay vital investment in our city."

The developers behind the Library plans, Nuveen, are 'considering their options' about what they'll do next.
