The police officer poisoned by novichok in Salisbury last year wanted to support the hospital ward that helped with his recovery.

Nick Bailey took on the Salisbury 54321 yesterday (Sunday 11th August) in support of the Stars Appeal.

He particularly wanted to raise money for the Radnor ward, intensive care, where he was looked after in March 2018.

Detective Sergeant Bailey was poisoned by novichok while responding to the major incident.

He attended the home of Sergei Skripal in Christie Miller Road when he was exposed to the nerve agent and needed to spend two and a half weeks at Salisbury District Hospital.

DS Nick Bailey came into the Spire FM studios to launch his marathon fundraiser back in February

Nick's said the challenge has been about marking his personal recovery. but also a way of saying thank you to the hospital that saved his life.

After the run, he spoke to Sky News:

"I took quite a knock with the poisoning, both mentally and physically and I wanted to have something to work towards.

"I also wanted to give something back to the hospital, so I started in February with the fundraiser and it went from there."

Nick finished the notoriously difficult marathon in a decent time of 4 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds.

Nick's efforts have also been recognised by his boss, Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Kier Pritchard, as well as the CEO of our hospital, Cara Charles-Barks and the charity he's been supporting:

  • There were over 1000 entries
  • Those taking part could choose between 4 running distances, and 6 walking options
  • Athletes from the UK and as far away as South Africa, New Zealand and Alaska were signed up
  • The trails take in Salisbury, surrounding villages, Wilton, including Salisbury's 5 Rivers, 4 Hills, 3 Country Estates, 2 Castles and past 1 Cathedral

There's also still time to donate to DS Nick Bailey's JustGiving page for the Stars Appeal.
