Amesbury man fined for flytipping

Published by Faye Tryhorn at 12:58pm 13th August 2019.

A 22 year old man has admitted dumping five bags of household waste on Stockport Road in the town.

Octavian Pana, from Beyer Road in Amesbury has been fined a total of £796, during a hearing at Salisbury Magistrates Court yesterday (Monday 12th August).

The prosecution was brought by Wiltshire Council's environmental enforcement officers.

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste said:

"This fly-tipping prosecution highlights that we take all reports seriously and will fully investigate them however small. Fly-tipping will not be tolerated in Wiltshire. It's a disgusting blight on our local environment, a source of pollution, a potential danger to public health and it is a drain on council resources at a time when resources are limited. The household recycling centre was less than 5 minutes away from where the waste was dumped and was open at the time of the offence."

FLYTIPPING A GROWING PROBLEM

There's a history of flytipping in the Stockport Road area, especially now the through road there is closed to traffic.

Wiltshire Council say they're now 'proactively working' in that area to try and catch culprits.

This news also follows revelations from Wiltshire Wildlife Trust that they've been forced to regularly clear up dumped waste from some of their nature reserves.

TACKLING UNLICENSED WASTE COLLECTORS

The authority's recently brought in a new £200 fixed penalty notice for householders who give their waste to unlicensed waste collectors.

Two of these new fines have been issued in the last three weeks alone.

The Council's advising residents to carry out checks with waste collectors, before allowing them to remove their waste.

We can also report fly-tipping and unauthorised waste carriers via Wiltshire Council's website.
