The work that caused major traffic issues yesterday have been stopped for the time being.

Openreach is looking to install fibre optic cables around the junction of Salisbury Road, The Headlands, Long Close and Wick Lane.

They arrived on site on Thursday morning (August 15th), with some four way temporary traffic lights set up.

Cars were spotted turning around in the congestion yesterday because the wait was so long

That brought with it some major congestion in the area - with reports of it taking up to half an hour to get from Breamore to Downton and 45 minutes to travel from Charlton-all-Saints to Downton.

Tailbacks were estimated to be stretching a couple of miles in each direction.

Openreach has been given us more details about what the cables are for.

They've said the work's needed as 'part of a community fibre partnership' to provide broadband for new housing being built in the area.

It ISN'T part of the huge project by Openreach to install faster connections to all premises in Salisbury.

They've also explained that they'll be looking to make changes to the Downton scheme from now on:

"The work has stopped for the time being and we'll look for a more suitable time (probably out of hours).  We're working with Wiltshire Highways on this."
