LOOK: Our chance to see the famous 'Matchstick Salisbury Cathedral'

Published by Faye Tryhorn at 5:57am 19th August 2019.

The model of the building's West Front, made entirely of matchsticks, is going on display in Salisbury from today.

It's been a labour of love for Barry King, from Amesbury, who's spent SIX AND A HALF YEARS on the project.

Here's some of the facts and figures behind it:

  • 800,000 matchsticks in the model so far
  • Expected to eventually include 5 to 6 MILLION
  • 400 - 500 hours of work, on top of Barry's full time job
  • It costs around £475 to buy a million matchsticks

SEE IT FOR YOURSELF

Barry's been working on this since 2011 and last displayed the Salisbury Cathedral so far 5 years ago.

He admits himself that 'pictures just don't do it proud, you have to see it up close', so now's our chance.

The attention to detail is incredible, so Barry's giving us a chance to see it in real life at Salisbury Guildhall

The model's available for us to take a look at within Salisbury Guildhall at the following times:

  • Monday 19th August - 11.00am to 5.00pm
  • Tuesday 20th - Friday 23rd August - 9.00am to 5.00pm
  • Tuesday 27th - Thursday 29th August - 9.00am to 5.00pm

WHY BUILD IT?

Barry says he started this project as a way of challenging himself, but also to 'create some artwork to remembered for'.

Barry's advice to anyone thinking of doing a similar challenge: 'Do it as a team'!

He thinks he's got another 15 years of work to go to completely recreate Salisbury Cathedral, after which he'll have broken the WORLD RECORD for a matchstick model:

The matches laid out at Barry's home, ready to be used in the model (nice choice of tea mug too!)

Entry to see the model so far is free of charge, but Barry is collecting donations for the Stars Appeal.

He's supporting the Salisbury District Hospital charity following a few visits there as a patient and seeing the incredible work they're doing to support those using the hospital day in, day out.

BARRY THE MEDIA STAR!

In recent weeks, Barry's efforts to recreate our famous Cathedral haven't gone unnoticed.

He's appeared in national newspapers including the Daily Mail, the Independent and The Times, as well as featuring on ITV's This Morning.
