800 years after Salisbury Cathedral moved from Old Sarum to what became our city, there are plans for a huge celebration.

The theme of Salisbury 2020 will be about a 'city on the move', with three central ideas:

  • Physical activities giving people a chance to participate in sports, echoing the strength it took to build a new Cathedral
  • Events focussed on technology to mark the engineering feat of building the Cathedral and its spire
  • Activities based on faith and thoughts to mirror the vision of the Cathedral's forebears

Salisbury 2020 is a partnership between the Cathedral, the City Council, Wiltshire Council, Salisbury BID, the Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership and Wiltshire Creative, with the 3D logo created by Signs Express

WHAT COULD WE EXPECT?

The final programme of events hasn't been finalised yet, but we're promised a massive year of events to celebrate the anniversary.

Some of the ideas that have been suggested include:

  • A fireworks display in the Cathedral Close
  • Procession from Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral, similar to the Olympic torch relay
  • More dance events within the Salisbury International Arts Festival, to keep with the theme of movement
  • Sports events open for the whole community to get involved in

LISTEN:

The Dean of Salisbury Cathedral, Nick Papadopolous said it's a really important milestone in the city's history:

Salisbury City Council will also be involved in organising activities - their Leader Jeremy Nettle has been telling Spire FM why he thinks it'll be an exciting year:

"We see this as tremendous in cementing relationships after last year's incidents, not only doing that but bringing other people into Salisbury that wouldn't normally come into the city. We just want to make this an amazing year, not only to celebrate the year, but it also becomes a foundation stone - just like with the Cathedral 800 years ago - for more activities, more culture, more things that can happen in this city. It's a great opportunity for everybody, of all ages, to get involved."

Fireworks in the Cathedral Close could be a feature of Salisbury 2020

Salisbury 2020 is aimed at being a year that brings the city together for celebration, building on the partnerships and sense of community forged following the novichok incidents in 2018.
