Marks & Spencer will be blowing out a lot of candles this weekend.

Marks & Spencer will be hosting a birthday party this Sunday to mark the special occasion and have invited staff both past and present to join in the celebrations.

Having opened in 1969, the store has been a staple plot in the city for half a century and welcomes thousands of shoppers through its doors every day.

Rob Hall, Backstage Manager at the Salisbury store, said:

"It feels fantastic to be a part of the celebration and it's a good store to work at.

"I've been at this particular store for four years, but I've also worked for other local M&S outlets around the South.

"The store has definitely changed since I've been here. I've seen a few refits during my time and a shift in staff proceedings,

"We're hosting a party to celebrate the 50th birthday on Sunday, where staff members old and new will be present. We've got a few surprises coming up, and it'll be lovely to hear stories from former staff members who were there on day one and for them to see how much it's changed.

"The store is so important to Salisbury. What with the current retail climate a lot of stores have been closing, and we've lost big companies like BHS. We're very lucky to have this outlet in Salisbury and it's a great company to work for."

Loyalty is clearly at the heart of the store, with a number of employees having worked at the Salisbury outlet for more than 20 years.

M&S has been a staple supermarket for the city since its opening in 1969.

Janet Street, a former employee who worked during the transition period from the old store to the new shop in the centre, praised the efficiency of the company:

"The standards were really high when I worked for the company back in the 1960s and 1970s. I was one of the original team who moved from the old store into the new building.

"The store is very important to the city. As a brand Marks & Spencer is very well liked and we look to the company for quality."

Employees at the store have described the team and the superstore as 'one big happy family' and 'a really good environment to work in.'

Local shoppers in Salisbury have also commended the supermarket and believe the store is at the heart of the local community.
