The mobile van made its first ever visit to the city centre on Wednesday 18th December.

Led by Wiltshire Council, a mobile Veterans Outreach Support service van has been travelling across the South West providing extra help for former members of the Armed Forces.

The van contains lots of information and support for Veterans and is part of a wider regional partnership project to raise awareness and encourage engagement in the Armed Forces Covenant.

WHAT IS THE ARMED FORCES COVENANT

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

NEW PROJECT

It is still a relatively new service which started running in June 2019 across the region.

It was made possible after winning £190,000 from MOD Covenant Fund Trust funding in 2016 and an extra £150,000 in 2018.

Organisations across the area that can provide support for veterans are invited to visit the bus and see what help they can offer.

After making it's first visit to Salisbury in the middle of December, they now have plans to bring it back more times across 2020.

They don't have any concrete dates for visits yet, but planning is well underway.

Sarah Welch, Veteran Outreach Officer, said:

"This is a relatively new capability, we've only been running it since June 2019 and we are trying to get out as much as possible.

We don't exactly know yet where our support is required so the idea is to promote our services as much as possible by going to some of the larger locations like Salisbury, however that doesn't mean we can't go to more geographically remote locations.

Our programme for this year is currently in development and we are happy to receive requests from area that think might have a need for some support."

More details and dates will be posted on their website.
