The annual charity event to help beat prostate cancer returns in June this year.

On June 14th 2020, Salisbury's Race For Men is back, but this time it's not just men who can take part.

For the first time in six years, women are being asked to take part this year.

The 'Race For Men' name is being kept as it's raising money for a male cancer charity

It was set up in 2015 after Toby Giles and his brother Steve's dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer so they wanted to increase the awareness of the disease amongst men.

Last year they managed to raised just over £5,000.

Toby, who is Director of the event, told Spire FM

"We are asking women to come and join us for the first time this year. Over the past few years we've had so many people asking us if they can run because their father has been diagnosed with prostate cancer or their grandad and they want to support and raise as much money as they can as well.

It is the most common cancer in men and ever since the end of 2013/14, when our dad was diagnosed with it, me and Steve made it our mission to make everybody more aware of this cancer that no one really knew anything abut and so over the last six years we've tried to raise as much awareness as we can so that's why we asked the Stars Appeal if we could make a prostate cancer fund for the local people."

HOW IT WORKS

There are three different half road and half cross country race distances for competitors to choose from:

  • 3km
  • 10km
  • 21km (equivalent of a half marathon)

Starting at Hudson's field, the course takes runners out towards the Durnfords, round Old Sarum and then back to the start.

Toby says it is challenging, but it's definitely doable for everyone.
