Durrington's 'pink runner' sets himself HUGE fundraising target

Carl Orme is hoping to raise £20,000 through 2020 for Breast Cancer Now.

You might have seen Carl on the streets of South Wiltshire, at local supermarkets, at Salisbury FC's ground or at the city's parkrun in recent months.

He's the guy who's dressed all in pink, sometimes with dyed hair too, collecting for charity.

Carl's challenged himself to run 20 marathon distance events this year in support of Breast Cancer Now.

He's told Spire FM he's doing it as his mum's battled breast cancer twice:

"The first time, we nearly lost her. The chemotherapy was very aggressive and she only just made it through. After the second time she had a double mastectomy, which of course is a difficult decision for any woman to make. But it was the right one in terms of her health. When you think that 55,000 women in the UK are diagnosed every year - one every 10 minutes - they need all the help and support they can get."

Carl's already completed some of his runs, and had found it very challenging already:

The married father of three says he's also find it tough to fit in all the organisation and training for his year of fundraising:

"(I'm) trying to be as organised as I physically can. I suppose it's almost using my military background in trying to be a bit disciplined with it. Runs, I often have to go very early in the morning to try and fit it in and I've been known to being charity stuff 11 or 12 o'clock at night as well. I don't just want this to succeed, I need it to succeed."

Carl aims to raise a total of £20,000 across the year, towards breast cancer research.

The charity Breast Cancer Now has written to Carl to say a big thank you for his support:

If you thought those marathons were enough of an effort to raise money, Carl's putting together other events for the cause.

That includes a sportsman's dinner at Salisbury FC's Ray Mac, on Friday 28th February.

The guest of honour there will be former Olympic swimmer and TV presenter Sharron Davies MBE:

There'll also be a performance from the Salisbury Plain Military Wives Choir and a charity auction, full of sports memorabilia.

Tickets for that are £30, available by emailing Carl on bcn2020challenge@hotmail.com

He's also set up a JustGiving page for any donations.

Carl has raised more than £1,600 so far.
